Legislators are dictating what I can buy, with no justification, which restricts my purchasing choices and undermines the US free-market economy protected by constitutional rights.
As an ex Californian living in VA I would like to support this effort. I love the CA wines and have been able have shipments delivered to my house until just yesterday. I am a wine club member of Wood Family in Livermore and wanted to place an order, which I have been able to receive in the past. Now I have to it delivered to a different state, like Maryland, Delaware or PA. This is crazy. How can I help?
This is a great question and Virginia demonstrates everything that is wrong in the US beverage alcohol system today. Virginia has chosen to step outside of its bounds and is incredibly influenced by the Virginia wholesaler association, and now having the CEO of the VA ABC a former head of the VA Wholesalers Association things can only get worse for Virginia consumers. The big goal of states is to license sellers, collect taxes, and ensure any specific limits are met. The ABC however believes (under wholesaler influence) that they need to control sales further than this. They need to be able to visit locations outside of the state to inspect those locations (for what we do not know) because the licensed seller is who is accountable for the sale and shipment. The physical shipping point, who adds a label to a box etc. has not baring on anything. The best cause of action is to contact the Governors office about this. Gov. Youngkin is pro business, and yet he allows the ABC to prove to be anti-business for out of state sellers and consequently reducing Virginia consumers choice, and losing the tax revenue as well. Happy to answer any further questions should they pop up.
